“Tarot? That’s Not for Me… Or Is It?”

I was sitting with my deck of Tarot cards and just contemplating on the cards one by one, what their intuitive meaning could highlight and how I can use it in my upcoming college workshop, when Khushi, my distant cousin, who lives just 3 houses down to my home came in and knocked on the door. Didi, "Main andar aa jaun kya?"

"Mujhe kuch baat karni hai apse" Khushi said. And then she presented her dilemma about going for campus placements, as she is in Sem V of her BBA course and companies have started to join in for placements. They are required to fill a form if they wish to opt-out of the placement process for any reason. She feels that she should get a job and work for a while and may be after some years, pursue MBA for career growth. However, her parents insist that No, complete your degrees first, MBA after BBA and then only join company, once and for all.

After listening to all of her confusion, and understanding her thought- process, I offered her to get this clarity from tarot cards. At first instance, she got a little skeptical and said, "Didi aap mazak mat karo na. Mujhe koi prediction thodi chaiye. Mujhe to bs ek option clarity chaiye."

Then i said to her, "let me ask the cards and help you. I promise, there will be No predictions. No drama. Just some images and questions." Unexpectedly, she got really excited, as being a Gen Z, they are very much open to new and innovative tools and techniques. And thanks to Instagram, many know about these cards as prediction- tool only. Contrarily, she wanted to know that how can cards clear this confusion?

This is where many Gen Z students unknowingly meet tarot—not as a mystical practice, but as a tool for self-awareness. So let’s explore how Gen Z can use tarot in practical, grounded, and meaningful ways—and why college students should orient themselves toward this tool early in their professional lives.

WHAT GEN Z Thinks about Tarot cards?

Many college students believe tarot is not meant for them. It is often seen as outdated, superstitious, or disconnected from academic and professional life. This misunderstanding comes from how tarot has been popularly presented, not from what it truly represents.

On the contrary, for a generation that openly discusses mental health, identity, career confusions and emotional balance, tarot fits more naturally than it appears. In its modern and ethical form, tarot is reflective rather than predictive.

It does not tell people what will happen; instead, it helps them explore what is happening within them. At its core, tarot works as a structured self-reflection tool. Gen Z students frequently ask themselves why they feel stuck, confused, or unmotivated despite having options. Tarot cards act as visual prompts that slow the mind and bring hidden thoughts to the surface.

When the person looks at an image and reflects on what it reminds them of, they begin to articulate feelings that were previously unclear. This is why tarot for Gen Z often supports self-awareness rather than belief or superstition.

How Gen Z Can Use Tarot in Multiple Ways (And Why It Matters Early)

College is the most amazing time, in anyone's life. Whenever you listen to millionaires, they found the best of friends, life partner, business- partner, in their college days. Having, said that, college life also comes with emotional complexity. Friendships change, relationships begin and end, and comparisons become constant. Decision-making is another area where Gen Z struggles early in life. From choosing courses and internships to deciding whether to follow passion or security, students face pressure long before entering full-time careers. For many others, self- confidence is another silent challenge for many college students. Despite appearing independent and outspoken, self-doubt often runs deep.

In such crucial and emotionally complex times, Tarot helps students recognize emotions instead of ignoring them. By reflecting on symbols and stories in the cards, they learn to name feelings, understand triggers, and respond more thoughtfully. This makes tarot closely connected to emotional intelligence, a skill that is increasingly valued both personally and professionally. Tarot does not make decisions for them, but it encourages perspective. It highlights inner conflicts, fears, and motivations that logic alone may overlook.

Regular reflective practices using tarot help students recognize strengths, patterns, and personal values. Over time, this builds self-trust and reduces dependence on external validation. Tarot becomes a decision-making support tool rather than a replacement for rational thinking. With responsible use, tarot supports confidence building by encouraging students to listen to their own inner responses.

Why College Is the Right Time to Learn This Skill

Most people discover self-awareness tools after burnout.

But college is actually the best time to:

  • Learn how your mind works

  • Build emotional resilience

  • Develop clarity before entering the corporate world

Tarot helps students practice:

  • Reflection

  • Pattern recognition

  • Conscious decision-making

These are professional life skills, not distractions.

“Tarot Is Not for Serious Students" IS IT REALLY TRUE, for GEn Z?

There is a common belief that tarot is not meant for "serious or career-oriented students." My opinion is a bit contrary to that. Gen Z are the most digitally active and accepting generation to most modern and innovative technologies and methodologies. In fact, Gen Z already uses many modern tools and applications to approach life and work. Popular categories are usually, like:

  • Journaling

  • Therapy apps

  • Personality tests

  • Mindfulness practices

Tarot, comes with the most basic method, in which our brains comprehend. In the language of the Universe. That is, numbers, colors and pictures. It just adds another layer, through:

  • Visual engagement

  • Symbolic thinking

  • Structured reflection

It fits perfectly into a modern self-growth toolkit.

A final-year student once said:

“Tarot didn’t tell me what career to choose. It helped me understand why I was afraid to choose at all.”

That insight alone changed how she approached decisions. That is the real value of tarot for Gen Z.

CONCLUSION

Tarot supports these qualities indirectly by improving intuition, self-regulation, and inner alignment. Students who develop these skills early often communicate better, manage uncertainty more calmly, and make career choices that feel authentic rather than forced.

Tarot is not a belief system; it is a skill-based reflective practice. For college students and young adults, it offers a way to understand themselves better in a world full of noise and expectations. When approached with awareness and balance, tarot becomes less about cards and more about clarity, confidence, and conscious growth—qualities that matter deeply in both personal and professional life.
